Sigiriya Village Walk

The morning rays of sun are inviting and mark the ideal time to stretch your legs. Walk with us along the suburbs of Sigiriya skimming through the islanders’ excitements and anticipations on a brand-new day.

Amble from the junction adjacent to the tank, and make your way along the borders of the Sigiria Sanctuary. You can witness the vestiges of an innercity wall which is slowly but steadily conquered by Mother Nature, expanding her territory for the gentle giants. Sharing the bushes with them are the villagers of Sigiriya who are setting about, starting another day in the paradise isle. Hemmed with patches of paddy fields and small farmlands these inland villages are the idyllic setting to acquaint with the Sri Lankan rural community.

The gravel roads are habitually littered with children heading off to school in their blue and white uniforms, farmers cycling out on their bikes plus the typical mothers who accompany either their children or husbands shouting orders to the family whilst shyly greeting you and their neighbours. How they manage to do both is still very much a secret, around the world. Rich with unique sounds, smells and sensations this stroll is a must to wind down and be one with the surroundings you are exploring.

The house pets hating to be left behind, will follow their owners. You might catch a glimpse of cats on gate posts or sunbathing revealing themselves unashamedly. The dogs might prefer to follow you, ensuring that the guests are kept safe from the oblivious peacocks, mongoose, lizard monitors and cows daring to wander into your path. The hens and chicks would get along with their business and will pay you no heed.

The villages are abundant with ancient man-made water reservoirs that date back to centuries. Walk along the shaded bunds observing the tanks infested with lotuses and water lilies painting a vivid picture too beautiful for a morning. Stop by a farm hut to enjoy the celebrated ginger tea with a hot, spicy wadei while sharing some village gossip.

Burn some calories and accumulate some fond memories within approximately five kilometres as the sun becomes slightly offensive and the day spans out for some more adventure. Oh! And don’t forget to treat the self-appointed bodyguards with a biscuit ot two.
