Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay

Known to locals as ‘Arugam Kuda’, Arugam Bay is situated in the south eastern coast of Sri Lanka. A locality recognised for terrific surf points and for dregs of 1970s hippie counter-culture.

A surfer’s paradise, many flock around the bay to score undoubtedly some of the world’s best waves. Pottuvil Point, Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm, and Elephant Rock are namely some of the most popular surf breaks in the bay area.

A little known fact is that apart from the raved beach life, Arugam Bay has much to offer travellers who seek a more laid-back, sophisticated experience.

Panama is a coastal village that sits a few kilometres away from Arugam Bay. The last populated settlement in the southernmost Sri Lanka, Panama borders the Kumana National Park. A breath-taking setting of sand dunes, blue lagoon surrounded by emerald mangroves the village is quaint, remote and unspoilt. Despite the isolation the villagers are welcoming and would be happy to indulge you on a day of mud crab and Prawn fishing. There are plenty of trails to explore on bikes and wind down at the beach by Panama Rocks for sunset cocktails.

Amidst mangroves and waterways is where you’ll find Urani Lagoon, a rich ecosystem teaming with wildlife. A quiet boat ride will allow you mesmerizing views and share a morning with feathered and furry friends if they decide to wake up as early as you.

Kumana or Yala East National Park is popular more among avifauna than among humans. Sheltering more than 430 bird species, plus elephants, leopards, jackals, wild boars and many other mammals, the park spans over 36000 hectares. Less crowded and nonchalant, a guided safari can fill your afternoon with wondrous memories that’ll last a lifetime.

A few minutes’ drive from Panama will bring you to Kudumbigala Monastery. The only cylindrical stupa in Sri Lanka can be seen at this monastery. Away from humans the monastery today is inhabited by hermit monks who dedicate their time and life to meditation. The walk to the temple will warrant panoramic views, wood trails, and wildlife. The quiet tranquillity provides you a moment for some soul-searching and unearth long lost spirituality.

Arugam Bay is a collection of the obvious and the opaque. What you pick will define your holiday.
